The Colombo bourse closed the year on an optimistic note with both indices up on a turnover of Rs.1.3 billion, down from the previous day’s Rs.2.09 billion, with the All Share Price Index gaining 21.74 points (0.33%) and the Milanka 10.78 points (0.15%) with 102 gainers comfortably ahead of 60 losers.
Distilleries which peaked at Rs.185 was the main business generator closing flat at Rs.178 on nearly 0.5 million shares done between Rs.177 and Rs.185 contributing Rs.86.3 million to turnover.
The company announced that Rs.5.72 billion had been paid to its subsidiary, Milford Holdings (Pvt) Ltd, by the Government of Sri Lanka in consideration of 510.2 million Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation shares taken back by government following the successful challenge to the privatization of the country’s biggest insurer.
Distilleries as well as its subsidiary, Lanka Milk Foods which owns 12% of the parent had seen recent share price appreciation with investors anticipating the return of the payment consideration for the Insurance Corporation.
"It was a retail dominated day with several stocks including the poultry companies, ERI and PC House attracting retail play," Prashan Fernando of Acuity Stockbrokers said.
Bairaha continued its dizzy upward spiral gaining Rs.20.90 yesterday to close at Rs.325.90 on over 0.2 million shares done between Rs.303.30 and Rs.330.
Three Acre Farms and Grain Elevators too were up with Three Acres gaining Rs.1.40 to close at Rs.89 on nearly 0.7 million shares done between Rs.88.70 and Rs.92 while Grains closed 10 cents up at Rs.74 on over 0.4 million shares done between Rs.73.50 and Rs.75.50.
Environment Resource Investments (ERI) saw quantity after some time with nearly 0.7 million shares traded between Rs.83 and Rs.87.50 gaining Rs.1.60 to close at Rs.86.90.
2010 had been a good year for the CSE which was Asia’s best performer and the second best in the world.
Lanka Tiles, up Rs.6.90 to Rs.134.70 on 0.3 million shares, Coco Lanka, up Rs.3.90 to Rs.64.60 on nearly 0.7 million shares, Commercial Bank, down 60 cents to Rs.260 on nearly 0.2 million shares and Lanka Ceramics, up Rs.7 to Rs.112 on 0.3 million shares were other counters contributing to turnover.
Royal Ceramics also gained Rs.7.90 to close at Rs.304.90 on 86,800 shares.
