John Keells Tea Market Report: Excellent demand for Low Growns

The larger weight of 4.0 mkg of Low Growns that came under the hammer met with excellent demand. The unusually heavy rains followed by very cold nights have drastically reduced the crop intakes in most Low Grown Planting Districts. In some areas the decline is as much as 60 percent. Considering the lower volumes expected at the sales in February, most out markets bid strongly to source their requirements.

The cold northern hemisphere weather is also expected to keep the prices buoyant in the first quarter. There was excellent demand from Iran and Russia, whilst Iraq, Dubai, Jordon, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Libya also lent useful support. Today’s 1.3 mkgs of Ex Estate teas met with fair demand at lower levels. Prices for BOPs on average declined Rs 10 to Rs 15, whilst BOPFs too shed but to a lesser extent, except for a few invoices which sold well following quality. Nuwara Eliya’s continued on a weaker note with limited inquiry and number of BOP invoices selling below Rs 300. BOPFs were irregular selling between Rs 300 to Rs 315.

The Uva BOP/BOPFs were firm to Rs 5 to Rs 10 lower, whilst semi leafy invoices too tended lower. The Best Low Grown CTC PF1s were mostly firm, whilst others were firm to Rs 10 to Rs 15 easier. High and medium PF1s too declined by a similar margin. Brokens on average mostly maintained. The tea bag sector lent fair support, whilst Russia was somewhat selective. UK, Japan and Continental buyers operated following quality.

Western Teas

Select Best BOPs declined Rs 20 to Rs 25, other good invoices shed Rs 10, Below Best and plainer varieties eased Rs 10 to Rs 15 on average. A few Select Best BOPFs were firm following special inquiry, most others declined Rs 10 to Rs 15, Below Best sorts eased Rs 5 to Rs 10 and more, plainer varieties too were Rs 5 to Rs 10 easier. Medium BOPs were firm. BOPFs eased Rs 5 to Rs 10. Nuwara Eliya Teas - BOPs declined Rs 15 to Rs 20. BOPFs were firm. Uva Teas - BOPs were firm. BOPFs eased Rs 5 to Rs 10. Uda Pussellawa BOP and BOPF eased Rs 5 to Rs 10.

CTC Teas

Select Best Low Grown CTC PF1 declined Rs 5 to Rs 10, others shed Rs 10 to Rs 15 and more at times. BP1s were firm. High and Medium PF1s shed Rs 5 to Rs 10 on average, BP1s were firm to easier.

Low Growns

Fair demand. Select Best OP1s eased Rs 10 to Rs 20, however the Best and Below Best types advanced sharply by a similar margin, stalky varieties declined Rs 10 on average. Select Best along with the Best BOP1s were steady, clean Below Best types too were dearer by Rs 5 to Rs 10 and more at times, poor types were firm. Select Best OPs maintained last levels, the balance were irregularly lower by Rs 3 to Rs 5. Select Best OPAs appreciated Rs 5 to Rs 10, however the Best types were irregularly lower by Rs 5 to Rs 10, Below Best and poor sorts were firm. Select Best Pekoes appreciated Rs 20 to Rs 30, the balance were firm on last levels. Select Best and Best Pekoe1s eased Rs 10 to Rs 20, Below Best and poor sorts too were lower by Rs 5 to Rs 10. Select Best BOP / BOP.SP maintained last levels. Best and Below Best types too were firm, poorer sorts shed Rs 5 to Rs 10. Select Best FBOPs maintained last levels, Best and Below Best types shed Rs 5 to Rs 10, poor sorts were firm. Select Best FBOPF1s were firm, however Best and Below Best types were lower by Rs 5 to Rs 10/, poor sorts were firm. Select Best and Best typpy varieties maintained last levels, Below Best and poor sorts were lower to last.

Off Grades

Select Best and Best liquoring FNGS1s sold at firm levels whilst the Below Best and the poorer sorts declined by Rs 10 to Rs 15 and more at times.

Select Best and Best BMs were firm to dearer by Rs 5 whilst the Below Best and poorer sorts depreciated Rs 10. All Low Grown FNGS declined Rs 10.

All BPs were firm to dearer by Rs 10. Select Best BOP1As were firm to dearer by Rs 10 to Rs 20, Best BOP1As were firm to dearer by Rs 5 on average, Below Best BOP1As were firm on last levels, poorer sorts however shed Rs 5 to Rs 10.

Dust

Low demand. Select Best Dust1s declined Rs 10 to Rs 15 whilst the Best and Below Best types too declined Rs 15 to Rs 20, poorer sorts declined further. Clean secondaries were firm whilst the balance shed Rs 10 to Rs 15. Best Low Grown Dust / Dust1s were firm whilst the balance were irregularly lower.
