John Keells Tea Market Report: Good demand from Russia

With crops from major black tea producing countries recording negative variances in the third quarter of 2010 global black tea production in 2010 is now expected to be in excess of only around 90 kgs when compared to 2009 with the bulk of the contribution coming from Kenya and Sri Lanka.

Indian, Bangladeshi and Indonesian productions are expected to record negative variance at the end of the year.

With many producing countries experiencing adverse weather conditions the last quarter of 2010, is also not expected to yield substantial crops.

The aftermath of the recent tsunami and the devastating volcanic eruptions in Indonesia has apparently not affected tea production or transport.

The quantity of 0.86 kgs of Ex estate teas on offer met with better demand particularly for teas in the below best and plainer categories. Best Western High Grown BOPs were firm to Rs 10 to Rs 15 easier, while BOPFs were mostly firm. The below best and plainer types gained Rs 10 to Rs 15 and more towards the latter part of the sale. Nuwara Eliya BOPs too followed a similar trend whilst BOPFs were firm to a little dearer in comparison to previous week’s prices.

Uva and Uda Pussellawa BOP/BOPFs which were mostly firm, concluded the sale being Rs 10 to Rs 15 dearer. Below best and plainer Low Grown CTC PF1s that have been neglected in the past few weeks to some extent improved this week with price gains of Rs 15 to Rs 20 on average.

The best on offer maintained selling in the range of Rs 490 to Rs 500. High and Medium PF1s too were firm to dearer.

There was good demand from Russia and the tea bag sector whilst Japan, UK and Continental buyers too were fairly active.

The slightly smaller quantity of 3.2 Mkg of Low Growns met with good demand. In the leafies, the BOP1/OP1s shed Rs 10 per kg, while the OP/OPAs too declined Rs 10 to Rs 15 on last levels along with the Pekoe grades.

However, there was improved demand in the small leaf category and better FBOP/FF1s advanced Rs 10 per kg while the better Tippy varieties also advanced in value. Iran and Russia lent good support, whilst Dubai, Syria, Jordon, Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries were quite active.
Western Teas

Select Best BOPs which were easier at the commencement advanced Rs 10 as the sale progressed, Other Good Invoices were firm to irregular, Below Best and plainer varieties gained Rs 5 to Rs 10. Select Best BOPFs advanced Rs 10 to Rs 20 , Other Good Invoices gained Rs 10 , Below Best and plainer varieties advanced Rs 10 and more as the sale progressed. Medium BOPs gained Rs 10 to Rs 15. BOPFs too were Rs 15 to Rs 20 dearer.

Nuwara Eliya Teas

BOP declined Rs 10 and more. BOPFs advanced Rs 10 on average.

Uva Teas

BOP/BOPFs advanced Rs 10. Udapussellawa BOPs gained Rs 5 to Rs 10 , while the BOPFs too advanced by a similar margin.

CTC Teas
Select Best Low Grown PF1s were firm, others gained Rs 15 to Rs 20. High and Medium PF1s advanced Rs 10 to Rs 15 on average. BP1s were firm to irregular.

Low Growns

Fair demand. Select Best OP1s along with Best OP1s eased Rs 10 to Rs 15, Below Best types were irregularly lower by Rs 5 to Rs 10 , poor types were firm to Rs 5 to Rs 10 dearer at times. Select Best and Best BOP1s declined Rs 10 to Rs 20 and more at times, however the Below Best along with the poor types were firm to Rs 5 to Rs 10 dearer.

Select Best OPs shed Rs 20 to Rs 40 , Best types too were lower by Rs 10 to Rs 15 , however Below Best and poor sorts were irregularly dearer by Rs 5 to Rs 10. Select Best OPAs eased Rs 15 to Rs 20 , Best types too tended lower by Rs 10 to Rs 15 , however the Below Best and poor sorts were irregularly dearer by Rs 10 to Rs 15.

The Selected invoices seen for the Select Best Pekoe varieties declined Rs 10 to Rs 15 , however the bold Pekoes were firm to Rs 5 to Rs 10 dearer, flaky types too were dearer by a similar margin.

Select Best Pekoes shed Rs 10 to Rs 20 , Best types too were lower by Rs 10 to Rs 15 , Below Best and poor types maintained last levels. Select Best BOP/BOP.SPs advanced Rs 5 to Rs 10 , Best and Below Best types were firm, poorer sorts maintained last levels. Select Best FBOPs advanced Rs 5 per kg, Best types maintained last levels, Below Best sorts were dearer by Rs 5 to Rs 10, poorer varieties were irregularly lower to last.
