Late start on bourse CSE shrugs off losing streak on dismal volumes

The Colombo bourse yesterday shrugged off its six-day losing stream with both indices gaining but on a dismal turnover of Rs.558.4 million, down from the previous day’s Rs.0.93 billion, partly due to trading beginning at 11 am and ending at 2.30 pm.

The broking community requested the CSE to delay trading due to the city floods with many people stuck on the roads and unable to get to work and power outages too suffered in some parts of the city.

The All Share Price Index was up 34.52 points (0.53%) while the Milanka gained 30.30 points (0.43%) with 93 gainers outpacing 50 losers.

"It was a short trading day and as on the previous day activity was subdued," Prashan Fernando of Acuity Stockbrokers said.

Brokers said that the indices were down during early trading though on very thin volumes and picked up in the last hour also on thin volumes.

The day’s biggest turnover generator was Hemas Holdings where slightly over 1.8 million shares were traded between Rs.45 and Rs.46 with the counter closing flat at Rs.45.50 generating Rs.82.1 million turnovers.

Brokers said that two parcels of 100,000 shares were traded at Rs.45 while a third of 100,000 was done at Rs.45.10. There were several parcels of over 10,000 shares that commanded a price of Rs.45.50 earlier in the day.

Other counters that showed volume included Seylan Bank (voting), Tokyo (non-voting), Keells Hotels, Tokyo (voting) and Seylan (non-voting).

Royal Ceramics was up Rs.1.50 to Rs.305 on nearly 0.2 million shares traded between Rs.300 and Rs.305 including a crossing of nearly 13,000 shares at Rs.300.

Bonus shares allotted on the DFCC’s one for one bonus issue were listed yesterday with the counter gaining 60 cents to close at Rs.215 on 50,100 shares traded between Rs.204.90 and Rs.218.

JKH announced an interim dividend of Re.1 per share for the financial year 2010/11 XD from November 22 and with payment on December 1.
