Bourse crosses 7000 mark again

The Colombo Stock Exchange's benchmark index, All Share Index (ASI) again crossed 7000 yesterday after breaking the elusive mark on September 28, 2010.

During the day ASI gained 22.14 points (up 0.31%) to close at 7,014.85 while the more liquid MPI gained  points(up 0.17%) points to close at 7,327.22. Turnover for the day was Rs.5.6 billion.

 Laugfs Gas PLC (LGL) was the top contributor to the turnover which was recorded at Rs.877 mn. LGL also turned out to be the most aggressively traded counter during the day. In addition Distilleries PLC (Rs.381.6mn) and Laugfs Gas-nonvoting (Rs.271.4mn) made notable contribution to the daily turnover. Distilleries PLC recorded several off-the-floor deals of 1.7mn shares at a price of Rs.178.00.

 Meanwhile Panasian Power PLC, Colombo Land and Development Company PLC and ODEL PLC were among the aggressively traded counter in the day.

 Foreign participation witnessed an improvement with an amounted of 12.4% of the total market activity. At the end of the day foreign investors were the net sellers with a net foreign outflow of Rs.511.4mn
 Price appreciation in index heavy counters such as John Keells Holdings PLC (by Rs.1.00) and Commercial Bank PLC (by Rs.1.30) contributed positively to the market performance.
