Aug 03, 2010 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's Richard Pieris and Company said June 2010 quarter net profit shot up 698 percent to 270 million rupees from a year ago with strong contributions from the group's plantations and retail businesses.
June 2010 quarter sales of the group, which runs the network of 'Arpico' shopping malls, rose 29 percent to 6.3 billion, according to a stock exchange filing.
Basic earnings per share were 2.11 rupees in the June quarter compared with 0.26 a year ago.
According to an analysis of segmental results, operating profits from plantations rose to 348 million rupees from 231 million rupees a year ago while that from retail rose to 174 million from 100 million rupees.
Profit from the group's plastics and distribution business more than doubled to 76 million rupees but tyre retreading profits fell and its rubber business made a loss of 17 million compared with a profit of 34 million rupees the year before.
The Richard Pieris group returned to profitability last year, making a net profit of 580 million rupees in the financial year ending March 31, 2010 compared with a loss of 329 million the year before.
