Mid-tier stock widely sought Retailers help bourse to sustain upward momentum

The Colombo bourse yesterday sustained its upward movement posting a turnover of Rs.3.58 billion, up from the previous day’s Rs.2.63 billion, with both indices gaining nicely – the All Share by 52.46 points (0.78%) and the Milanka by 62.28 points (0.88%) with 126 gainers comfortably outpacing 57 losers.

Once again mid-tier stock like Reefcomber, Laugfs, Bairaha, Richard Pieris, Grains and Seylan Merchant leasing contributed the major business volumes.

"We saw a lot of activity on the market once again with retailers largely responsible," Prashan Fernando of Acuity Stockbrokers said. "Large volumes of Laugfs Gas were traded after the company announced and agreement with Bharat Petroleum of India.’’

This is to to introduce what was described as ``innovative metal cutting gas’’ in Sri Lanka under the brand name of Laugfs Bharat Metal Cutting Gas.

The Laugfs announcement was made less than five minutes before the market closed and two crossings of nearly 2.4 million shares at a price of Rs.30 were done in the last minutes of trading, Fernando of Acuity said.

Yesterday’s top turnover generator was Citrus (previously Reefcomber) with over 2.9 million shares done between Rs.70 and Rs.79.50 gaining Rs.6.10 to close at Rs.73.30 contributing Rs.222.6 million business volumes.

Laugfs with over 7.2 million shares done between Rs.26.50 and Rs.29.40 (on the market) closed Rs.2.40 up at Rs.29.30 contributing the second biggest turnover of Rs.207.7 million.

Bairaha Farms continued its spectacular surge gaining Rs.37.90 to close at Rs.420 with nearly 0.5 million shares done between Rs.382 and Rs.430 while Grain Elevators too gained Rs.3.50 to close at Rs.97 on nearly 2 million shares done between Rs.91 and Rs.98.70.

Seylan Merchant Leasing was very active with nearly 53.2 million shares done between Rs.1.90 and Rs.2.30 with the counter gaining 30 cents to close at Rs.2.30. The non-voting shares too saw heavy activity with 59.3 million shares trading closing 10 cents up at Re.1 on a trading range of Rs.0.80 to Rs.1.10.
