CSE gains momentum towards the end of the week

During the short trading week the All Share Price Index (ASPI) gained 154.32 points to close at new all time high of  7,346.81 points, while the Milanka Price Index (MPI) gained by 15.17 points to close at 7,180.49 points.  The daily average turnover was SLRs.  3.8 bn compared to SLRs.3.9bn last week and the week ended with foreign buying amounting to SLRs.0.72bn whilst foreign selling was SLRs.0.93bn.

On Monday market closed on a negative note with ASPI and MPI losing 17.62 points and 31.05 points respectively while total turnover for the day amounted to SLRs.3.2bn. Day's most heavily traded Laugfs Gas (LGL) voting share closed up SLRs.7.50 (15.7%) at 55.40 with more than 11.5mn shares actively traded posting day's single largest turnover. Hayleys which closed up SLRs.19.10 at 414.10 also made a significant contribution in terms of turnover. Lanka Aluminum was amongst the top gainers for the day with share price reaching a high of SLRs.83.00, however was subject to a 10% price band as per SEC regulations.

LGL posted the day's largest turnover for the second consecutive day on Tuesday with 7.7mn shares traded between SLRs.53.00 and 58.60. Colombo Fort Land & Building Company which closed up SLRs.41.10 (11.6%) at 395.80 also made a significant contribution in terms of turnover followed by Citrus Leisure (REEF) which closed up at SLRs.102.40 with approximately 2.4mn shares actively traded. Total turnover for the day reached SLRs.3.2bn and the market closed with ASPI gaining 15.90 points while MPI losing 12.99 points respectively.

Wednesday's total turnover amounted to SLRs. 4.1bn while the market closed with ASPI picking up 71.49 points while MPI closed up 29.66 points. Three Acre Farms posted the day's largest turnover of SLRs.343mn with the counter closing up 18.9%. Ceylon Grain Elevators which closed up SLRs.30.20 at SLRs. 240.80 contributed with a turnover of SLRs.269mn while Colombo Fort Land & Building Company posted a turnover of SLRs. 247mn with the counter closing at SLRs. 439.00, up by SLRs. 43.20. Total turnover for the day amounted to SLRs.4.1bn.

Market upsurge continued on Thursday with both ASPI and MPI gaining 84.55 and 29.55 points respectively. The single largest turnover of SLRs.293mn, reported by Richard Pieris and Company made a 6.26% contribution to the day's total turnover of SLRs.4.66bn, while the stock being highlighted as the most heavily traded with a 21mn shares traded. The counter closed up at SLRs.13.90. Madulsima Plantations was marked as the biggest gainer for the day with 39.71% positive change in share price to close at SLRs.28.50.

With more companies to release better than expected earnings during the coming week we expect the market to reach further highs.
