Prices beginning to stabilize John Keells Tea Market Report:

Latest reports from Kenya suggest that prices are beginning to stabilize, marked by improved demand from Egypt. A few weeks back 43 percent of the teas remained unsold due to lack of participation at the Mombasa auction.

In the meantime trouble appears to be brewing in India’s tea producing hill region of Darjeeling following a clash by protestors with the Police, who were part of a movement demanding a separate State.

According to the India Tea Board there are 86 tea estates in Darjeeling that produces of 10 mkgs of tea every year.

The violence and unrest is likely to hit tea and tourism badly which are important economic centres of the State.

Todays Ex-estate sale comprising of 0.86 mkgs of tea met with fair demand. A few good BOP’s and BOPF’s sold well following quality gaining Rs 10 to Rs 15 and more whilst others were firm to a little irregular at times.

The Best Low grown CTC PF1’s were firm to Rs 10 to Rs 20 dearer whilst others were somewhat easier. High and Medium invoices too tended Rs 5 to 10 lower.

There was good support from the tea bag sector whilst Russia too lent some support. UK, Japan and Continental buyers too were active following quality.

The restricted quantity of 2.4 mkgs of Low Growns that came under the hammer this week met with very good demand.

In the leafy category BOP1/OP1s maintained previous levels. The Pekoe1s met with improved demand and prices appreciated Rs 10 to Rs 15, however the bold Pekoes were mainly firm. The bottom end of the OPAs advanced Rs 10 to Rs 15, but all others sold around previous levels. There was excellent demand from Russia, Iran and Iraq, whilst Libya Dubai, Syria, Jordon, Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries also lent useful support.
 
Western Teas

Select Best BOPs advanced Rs 15 to Rs 20 following special inquiry, other good invoices were firm Below Best and plainer sorts were firm to Rs 5 easier, A few Select Best BOPFs advanced Rs 5 to Rs 10 following special inquiry, other good invoices were barely steady, Below Best sorts were firm to irregular, plainer varieties advanced Rs 5. Medium BOPs were irregularly lower. BOPFs eased Rs 10.
 
Nuwara Eliya Teas

BOPs were firm to marginally dearer. BOPFs were firm to irregular.
 
Uva Teas

BOP/BOPFs maintained last levels. Uda Pussellawa BOPs were firm, whilst the BOPFs gained Rs 5.
 
CTC Teas

Select Best Low Grown PF1s were firm, others declined Rs 10. High & Medium PF1s shed Rs 10. BP1s eased Rs 10 to Rs 15 on average.
 
Low Growns

Good demand. Select Best OP1s were steady, Best types were firm to Rs 5 to Rs 10 dearer, however the Below Best and poor sorts were irregularly lower by Rs 5 to Rs 10.

Select Best BOP1s shed Rs 10 to Rs 20, Best types too were lower by Rs 5 to Rs 10, Below Best and poorer sorts were firm on last levels. Select Best OPs were firm, Best types were irregularly lower by Rs 3 to Rs 5, Below Best and poor sorts were fully firm.

Select Best OPAs maintained last levels, Best and Below Best types were firm to Rs 3 to Rs 5 lower at times, poor sorts were firm to dearer by Rs 5 to Rs 10.

Select Best Pekoes appreciated Rs 10 to Rs 20 and more following quality, Bold Pekoes were irregularly dearer by Rs 5 to Rs 10, however the flaky types declined Rs 5 to Rs 10 and more at times.

Shotty Pekoe1s gained Rs 10 to Rs 20, Best types along with the Below Best varieties were irregularly dearer by a similar margin, poor types were firm. Select Best and Best BOP/BOP. SPs advanced Rs 10 to Rs 15, Below Best and poorer sorts too gained Rs 5 to Rs 10.

Select Best and Best FBOPs gained Rs 5 to Rs 10, Best types were firm, Below Best types moved up by Rs 5 to Rs 10, poorer sorts gained Rs 5 to Rs 10.

Select Best and Best FBOPF1s gained Rs 5 to Rs 10, Best types were firm, Below Best types moved up by Rs 5 to Rs 10, poorer sorts gained Rs 5 to Rs 10. Select Best tippy varieties advanced above last levels, Best and Below Best types gained a few rupees, poorer sorts too gained Rs 5 to Rs 10.
 
Off Grades

Select Best and Best liquoring Fng1s were lower by Rs 10, Below Best and poorer sorts depreciated Rs 10 and more at times. Select Best and Best BMs were dearer by Rs 5, Below Best and poorer sorts were firm to dearer by Rs 10.

All BPs were firm to dearer by Rs 5. All Low Grown Fngs eased Rs 10. Select Best and Best BOP1As were firm on last levels, whilst the Below Best and poorer sorts were firm to dearer by an average of Rs 5.
 
Dust

Select Best Dust1s eased Rs 5 to Rs 10, whilst the Best and Below Best Dust1s too declined Rs 15 to Rs 20,poorer sorts declined further. Clean secondaries were firm whilst the balance gained Rs 5 to Rs 10. Best Low Grown Dust / Dust1s shed Rs 5, whilst the balance gained Rs 10 to Rs 15.
