The Colombo Stock Exchange took off yesterday despite the holiday mood posting a turnover of Rs.2.3 billion, up from the previous day’s Rs.1.3 billion, with both indices up tidily – the All Share by 76.92 points (1.21%) and the Milanka by 76.04 points (1.11%) with 137 gainers leaving 24 losers trailing.
Brokers said that the gains were higher during intra-day trading and that JKH and Bairaha Farms were the chief contributors to turnover.
"The market did very nicely with JKH, the poultry companies, Tokyo (non-voting) and Piramal Glass being the main contributors to the day’s business volumes," Prashan Fernando of Acuity Stockbrokers said.
"There was a large crossing of over 1.7 million JKH at a price of Rs.300," he noted.
JKH gained 90 cents to close at Rs.299.50 on 2.3 million shares done between Rs.297.50 and Rs.299.50 on the trading floor. The counter contributed Rs.690.7 million to the day’s turnover.
All three chicken companies (Bairaha Farms, Grain Elevators and Three Acre Farms) moved up in price and showed volume with Bairaha gaining a hefty Rs.31.80 to close at Rs.280.60 on over 1.2 million shares done between Rs.251 and Rs.285 contributing the day’s second largest turnover of Rs.339 million.
Grains were up Rs.3 to Rs.71.30 on nearly 2.4 million shares done between Rs.67.10 and Rs.72.40 while Three Acres gained Rs.5.40 to close at Rs.81.50 on nearly 0.9 million shares traded between Rs.76.70 and Rs.82.
Tokyo X was up Rs.1.50 to close at Rs.39.90 on nearly 2.1 million shares and Piramal Glass up 30 cents to close at Rs.8.10 on over 9 million shares.
"Bairaha Farms saw crossings at Rs.270, Rs.275 and Rs.280," Fernando of Acuity said. "There was retail play on counters that showed large volumes."
C.W. Mackie was up Rs.6.10 to Rs.87 on over 0.7 million shares traded between Rs.82 and Rs.89.10 while Janashakthi also saw volume gaining a rupee to close at Rs.15.80 on over 2.8 million shares done between Rs.14.50 and Rs.16.
Some of the other big gainers included Central Finance, up Rs.35 to Rs.812 on 26,900 shares.
Laugfs, both voting and non-voting continued to gain on quantity with the non-voting share up 50 cents to Rs.17.50 on over 1.2 million shares and the voting share up 60 cents to Rs.25.60 on nearly 0.8 million shares.
