Sri Lanka President's Secretary elected as the Chairman of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization

 Sept 18, Colombo: Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to the Sri Lanka President and the Chairman of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, has been elected as Chairman of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization (CTO).

Weeratunga was unanimously elected Friday as the Chairman of the organization at its 50th Council Meeting held in Colombo, from September 16-17, 2010.

As the President's Secretary, Weeratunga is the topmost civil servant in the country and the de facto head of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service.

The CTO is an international agency, whose membership spans across the globe. It offers the highest quality programmes for capacity development, knowledge sharing and information services, expand and diversify partnerships between governments, business and other organisations to reduce global poverty and fulfill the global development agenda for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

Recently, the CTO has significantly reviewed its mandate to reflect and respond to today's global development challenges as set in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

CTO Council meeting attended by the Council delegates was held under the theme of "A Digital Commonwealth".

The 8th Annual CTO Forum, which preceded the Council meeting, was held from September 13� 15, 2010 in Colombo with the participation of over 100 telecom representatives including senior telecom officials from member countries, top executives of telecom firms and experts in the field of telecommunication from across the world.
