Bull run continues, 10 for one share split at LOLC

The bull run on the Colombo bourse continued unabated yesterday with both indices gaining sharply on a turnover of Rs.6.3 billion, up from Rs.6.7 billion on Tuesday, the last trading day, with the highlights of the day including an LOLC announcement of 10 for one share sub-division and continuing gains on most banking stock.

"The market run continued with JKH generating the day’s highest business volume and banking stock, with a couple of exceptions, making further gains," Prashan Fernando of Acuity Stockbrokers said. ``Pan Asia and NTB were down, but the rest of the banks were gainers.’’

The long anticipated share split by LOLC which had driven the share up to Rs.1,400 was formally announced with the counter closing the day at Rs.1,400, up Rs.280 from the previous close, with nearly 0.3 million shares done between Rs.1,360 and Rs.1,600.

The split is subject to shareholder approval. No dates have been given.

JKH led the pack in turnover terms, closing Rs.1.60 up at Rs.300 on nearly two million shares traded between Rs.296 and Rs.302 with three crossings of one million shares and two smaller parcels of 0.3 million and nearly 0.2 million also done at the same Rs.300 price.

There was heavy trading in Vallibel Power where 49.7 million shares were done including several large parcels ranging from five million to 15 million done at a price of Rs.8 which brokers said was "way below market."

The counter traded yesterday between Rs.8 and Rs.11 losing 70 cents to close at Rs.10.30 generating the second biggest turnover for the day of Rs.407.2 million.

Among the banking counters DFCC, Seylan X, HNB, Commercial Bank, NDB, Seylan and Sampath were all gainers while Pan Asia and NTB declined.

Sampath was up Rs.36.10 to close at Rs.105 on nearly 0.3 million shares while ComBank was up Rs.16.70 to close at Rs.265 on 0.9 million shares and HNB up Rs.4.10 to close at Rs.375 on 0.7 million shares. DFCC gained Rs.19 to close at Rs.427 on over 0.9 million shares.

Pan Asia was down Rs.7.80 to close at Rs.65 on nearly 2.1 million shares while NTB was down Rs.6.70 to close at Rs.95.50 on nearly 1.3 million shares.

Other counters that showed volume included Dialog, up 30 cents to Rs.12 on 24.8 million shares and Distilleries, down Rs.2.20 to Rs.183 on 1.4 million shares.
