Tourism in Sri Lanka growing as travellers uncover its delights

Sri Lanka is gradually opening up and seeing increases in the number of travellers visiting its shores.

According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, visitors are uncovering the many attractions the country has to offer, from wildlife to cultural festivals.

"All the wildlife is second only to Africa and you have a better chance of seeing a leopard there than in Africa," a spokeswoman for the body claimed.

She pointed out that Gap Year travellers and those volunteering in Sri Lanka can visit spas to enjoy a range of traditional Ayurvedic treatments during their break.

And once they have finished relaxing, they can enjoy some of the many religious and cultural events taking place.

"There is a pilgrimage at the end of July from the north that finishes up just outside Yala, which is all three religions – Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist – walking together," the representative said.

Figures from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority show that there were 44,730 tourist arrivals in the country in June this year, compared to 30,234 during the same month in 2009.
