Logistics today comprise is a sizable growth market worldwide with the industry gaining an increased growth rate annually, Hayleys Group Chairman and CEO, Mohan Pandithage said.

There is much potential for maritime and logistic related business in the upcoming Hambantota, Oluvil, Trincomalee, Kankesanthurai and Colombo South major port projects, he said.

“The advantage of a sound shipping industry will support tourism as well. Tourists will not only come by air but will also come in ferries in the near future.”
Pandithage was speaking at the 24th CACCI conference organized by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce recently.

There are plans to convert Galle harbour into a yacht harbour and we are getting many inquiries from cruise liners about stopping off in the Colombo port. This would provide a huge increase in the revenue to Sri Lanka, he said.

Pandithage said the enhanced shipping industry confirms a very encouraging development in the economy.
“Sri Lanka would be proficient to attract more foreign exchange towards the economy through ship bunkering with the development of Hambantota port,” he said.

The conducive initiatives taken by the Government and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) in the maritime industry will enable ship building, ship repairing, ship bunkering and many other related activities.
As the rapidity of public-private partnerships and outsourcing gathers momentum, the logistics industry is likely to benefit from continuous growth, Pandithage said.
