- Production increases by 47.2 % Q1 2010
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has purchased 118 tonnes of locally grown tea and shipped the consignment to Jordan and Pakistan to be distributed among the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) there.
An ICRC spokesperson said that Sri Lankan tea meets the ICRC’s stringent quality standards for food it distributes.
There has been a significant increase of tea production, marketing and exportation in the first quarter of 2010.
Through the resilience of farmers, supported by the efforts of the Government, tea production improved and the crop off-takes recorded a 47.2 % increase in the first quarter of 2010 on all elevations compared to the same period in 2009. Its elevation in January to March in 2009 was 49.8 which increased to 73.3 in the first quarter of 2010.
Marketing of tea has increased to a significant level from 2009 to 2010. It was 66.2MKg in 2009 which increased to 85.9MKg in 2010.
In the first quarter of this year, tea exportation has increased to 70,210 Qty. It was 69,926Qty in 2009.
Sri Lanka is second only to Kenya in black tea exportation where Sri Lanka exports 320,000 MT and Kenya 380,000 MT.
The Government has taken many measures to develop the tea industry. The Ceylon Tea Museum has been established in Hantana, Kandy, which stands as a monument to the success story of Ceylon tea. It provides an insight into how tea was manufactured in the early days. Old machinery, some dating back more than a century has been restored to working order.
An exhibition under the theme ‘Ceylon tea, pride of our nation’ will be held at this venue from 15- 17 July 2010.
