Sri Lanka wins luxury hotel award

Sept 17, 2011 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's Fortress Resort and Spa, has won the award fore the best coastal luxury hotel at a global travel awards, signalling the island's emerging position in the luxury end of the market, an official said.

"Winning the global award positively shows the arrival of Sri Lanka as a strong player in the world luxury tourist sector," general manager of Fortress Resort and Spa, Jan van Twest said.

Fortress is a luxury hotel controlled by entreprenuer Dammika Perera.

Fortress had won the global award for the best coastal hotel at the World Luxury Hotel Awards held in Zagreb, Croatia this year.

Van Twest said the hotel went through an eight month period of evaluation and voting to get the award.
Fortress is in Galle in Sri Lanka's southern coast, and follows Dutch architecture.

Sri Lanka's tourism industry is going through a boom after a three decade war ended in 2009.
