Nov 03, 2010 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's listed Cargills Ceylon has gained control of Kotmale Holdings, also a listed firm which has operations in dairy products, an official said, with a 61 percent stake trading for 770 million rupees on the floor."It is part of an accelerated diversification into the fast moving consumer goods sector," a group official said.
Two tranches of Kotmale Holdings totaling 19.25 million traded on the stock exchange at 40 rupees a share.
Dunamis Capital which sold the stakes said in a stock exchange filing it made a capital gain of 290 million rupees on the sale of a 31.37 percent stake in Kotmale Holdings.
A Dunamis subsidiary, First Capital, sold a 29.90 percent stake in Kotmale for 376 million rupees, it said.
The Cargills group runs Food City, Sri Lanka's largest retail chain. The group earlier took control of an ice cream plant from the Sri Lanka unit of Unilever and markets its products under 'Cargills Magic' brand.
