By Charnika Munasinghe

Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the former Prime Minister of Malaysia who is widely acknowledged as the architect of Malaysia’s modernization, arrived in Sri Lanka last evening. He was received by acting Minister of External Affairs, Geethanjana Gunewardena.

Dr. Mahathir is here ona two day visit and will deliver the keynote address at the first International Business Leaders Forum organized by the Sri Lanka - Malaysia Business Council (SLMBC) to be held today at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel.

With Asian economies gearing up for accelerated growth and leading the global economic recovery, Sri Lanka is poised to take off in a post-war environment -- which requires carefully crafted policies for sustainable development.

Dr. Mahathir Mohamad will deliver an address on the theme: “Malaysian Development Experience -- an Opportunity for Sri Lanka’s Economic Ascendance.” in which he is expected to reveal insights into Malaysia’s courageous and successful growth.

Sri Lanka’s business community leaders, as stakeholders in the Sri Lankan economy, could seize this opportunity to express their views in an interactive forum. Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama, Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Dialog Telecom PLC Group CEO Dr. Hans Wijesuriya and SLMBC Vice President & Mackwoods Chairman Dr. Chris Norris will participate in a panel discussion.

Dr. Mahathir Mohamad became the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia on 16th July 1981. Dr Mohamad is credited with having turned Malaysia’s economy from agriculture reliant to industrial based, while at the same time elevating Malaysia’s position to that of the 17th biggest trading nation in the world.
During the Asian financial crisis of 1997/98. Dr. Mohamad rejected International Monetary Fund aid and implemented Malaysia’s very own formula for economic recovery -- which formula remains a model of economic success.

The organizer of the forum, The Sri Lanka - Malaysia Business Council (SLMBC), was inaugurated in 1994, under the aegis of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka.

The Council has been actively promoting and facilitating trade and investment between Sri Lanka & Malaysia and is the only business council to grant annual business awards in recognition of the excellence and performance of its members.
