Sri Lanka - Huge potential for brokering firms

There is huge potential for brokering companies in the country as there are only 500,000 CDS account holders.

A brokering company has to play a proactive role in promoting and encouraging investment opportunities, Securities and Exchange Commission Deputy Director General Malik Cader told Daily News Business.

The potential in the outstation has not been fully tapped and need to concentrate and pay more emphasis on these areas. The investment activities received a boost with the setting up of a CSE branch in Jaffna.

A better performance could be expected in the near future with increased approach by the stock brokering companies to improve investment levels, he said. The stock brokering companies play a significant role in attracting new share holders. These companies get involved in the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) activities as any investor needs to go through a stock brokering companies to trade in the CSE.
With the automated trading process, the CSE provides an efficient service. It is rated as one of the best performing stock exchanges in the world.

The Securities and Exchange Commission Act requires a minimum capital of Rs 25 million and a minimum of two registered investment advisors for a stock brokering company to operate. (SJ)
