Dhammika appointed Hayleys’ Deputy Chairman

Largest single shareholder of Hayleys Plc, business figure Dhammika Perera has been appointed the Deputy Chairman of the conglomerate, Chairman and Chief Executive Mohan Pandithage informed the stock exchange in a filing.

According to the filing, Perera’s appointment was with effect from July 20, 2011.

Perera was appointed to the Hayleys director board as non-executive director in 2008.

As per the latest Hayleys annual report, Perera holds about 23 percent of Hayleys. In March 2011, Dhammika and Royal Ceramics, a company he controls acting in concert triggered the 30 percent mandatory offer requirement, offering to buy the rest of the shares from shareholders at Rs.380.

Yet, Perara received a very cold response from the shareholder, as he was able to acquire only 0.1 percent of the rest of the shares of the company during the mandatory offer period.

The appointment of Perera comes in the wake of two independent directors not seeking re-election.

Three new directors to the Hayleys board were recently appointed, out of whom two serve in other company director boards, controlled by Perera.

Dhammika was lately appointed as the Secretary to the Ministry of Transport.

His first public sector stint was when appointed as the Chairman/Director General of Board of Investments in July 2008.
