Bourse edges down

The Colombo bourse edged down yesterday on a modest turnover of Rs.1.46 billion, down from the previous day’s Rs.2.1 billion, with both indices moving down – the All Share by 7.25 points (0.10%) and the Milanka by 19.49 points (0.28%).

"It was a very quiet day with not much activity," brokers said, noting that the big business generators were Reefcomber, Bairaha Farms and Central Finance.

Retail activity was seen in Central Finance, PC House, Union Bank, Grain Elevators and Bairaha, brokers said.

Reefcomber, the day’s top turnover generator, saw nearly 3.1 million shares done between Rs.75 and Rs.85 gaining Rs.1.80 to close at Rs.77 contributing Rs.231.8 million to the day’s turnover. Brokers said that one crossing of nearly 0.9 million shares at Rs.75 per share was among the trades.

Both Bairaha and Grain Elevators, companies in the poultry business, saw volume though prices dipped. Bairaha was down Rs.10.50 to Rs.478 on over 0.2 million shares done between Rs.475.10 and Rs.497 while Grains lost Rs.3.30 to close at Rs.174 on nearly 0.2 million shares done between Rs.173 and Rs.182.

Central Finance, with 75,200 shares done between Rs.1,235 and Rs.1,260 lost Rs.11.90 to close at Rs.1,235 contributing Rs.93.9 million to turnover behind Bairaha’s Rs.112.2 million.

Among the blue chips JKH, ComBank (both voting and non-voting) and Hayleys gained and showed volume.

JKH was up Rs.1.10 to Rs.298 on nearly 0.2 million shares traded between Rs.295 and Rs.298, ComBank (non-voting) up Rs.3 to Rs.169 on nearly 0.3 million shares done between Rs.166.10 and Rs.177.50, ComBank (voting) up Rs.1.70 to Rs.270 on nearly 0.2 million shares done between Rs.267 and Rs.270 (including 75,000 shares crossed at Rs. 270) while Hayleys gained Rs.12 to close at Rs.402 on 0.1 million shares traded between Rs.395 and Rs.402.

Blue chip losers included Sampath, down a rupee to Rs.287 on over 0.1 million shares, Distilleries down Rs.1.10 to Rs.188.80 on nearly 0.2 million shares and CTC down Rs.1.20 to Rs.360.10 on 71,700 shares.

PC House gained 60 cents to close at Rs.20.10 on 1.5 million shares, Vallibel Power was up 80 cents to close at Rs.10.40 on 2.3 million shares and Laugfs up Rs.1.60 to close at Rs.44.10 on 0.5 million shares.
