Foreigners eager stock investors now

Anjana SAMARASINGHE

Foreign investors are eager to consider capital market opportunities available in Sri Lanka now, Deutsche Bank Global Transaction Banking Head Tyronne Hannan said.

"Sri Lanka is now on the map for investment opportunities and there are many inquiries from these foreign investors on the Sri Lankan bond market and other capital market options. Most of them now have opened CDS accounts at the CSE," he said.

Global investors focus more on Asia and now foreign investors invest in regional markets such as Thailand and Singapore. Foreigners will expand their investment portfolio to Sri Lanka soon.

Bartleet Mallory Stockbrokers Director Angelo Ranasinghe said stock brokers are organizing road shows individually in different countries to attract foreign investors and they aggressively promote CSE among foreigners.

He said the country needs to build a healthy retail investor base.

The country's labour force is eight million and if we could attract at least one million of this it will help for the development of the market. There is a huge potential for investments in the equity market, Ranasinghe said.

"With the more awareness on the market more savings will flow. With the favourable exchange rates, TB rates and decline in interest rates more funds will come into the equity market," he said.

"Returns from investments in the stock market is higher than the other fixed income investment opportunities.

There is an increase in corporate earnings and dividends too. There is a significant growth in the CSE daily turnover which will grow by Rs 3 billion to 4 billion in the next few years," he said.
