Retailers to the fore

The Colombo bourse closed the week yesterday on an upward mode with both indices up although turnover at Rs.1.64 billion, down slightly from the previous day’s Rs.1.65 billion, was relatively modest with retail activity the prominent feature of the day’s trading, brokers said.

The All Share Price Index was up 35.14 points (0.48%) while the Milanka gained 11.89 points (0.17%) with 99 gainers ahead of 90 losers.

"The market was positive throughout the day with a lot of retail activity evident in counters like Browns, Ascot, Bairaha Farms and LOLC," Prashan Fernando of Acuity Stockbrokers said.

Browns was the day’s biggest turnover generator gaining Rs.18.10 to close at Rs.329 on nearly 0.6 million shares done between Rs.300 and Rs.332 contributing Rs.187.6 million to the day’s business.

Ascot followed gaining Rs.8.90 to close at Rs.123.10 on over 1.1 million shares traded between Rs.114.20 and Rs.133.50 generating Rs.143.2 million turnover.

Bairaha was up Rs.12.20 to Rs.480 on nearly 0.3 million shares done between Rs.465.30 and Rs.490 while LOLC was up Rs.6 to Rs.122.50 on nearly 0.8 million shares done between Rs.118 and Rs.128.

Central Finance continued regaining some recently lost ground moving up a hefty Rs.53.40 to close at Rs.1,268.10 on 69,400 shares traded between Rs.1,220.10 and Rs.1,299.

JKH was down a shade losing 30 cents to close at Rs.297.50 on 87,500 shares done between Rs.295.50 and Rs.298 while Royal Ceramics gained 80 cents to close at Rs.158.90 on nearly 0.2 million shares done between Rs.156.40 and Rs.159.

There were three crossings – 800,000 Citrus warrants at Rs.26.50, 126,000 Royal Ceramics at Rs.159 and 150,000 ComBank (non-voting) at Rs.175.
