The Colombo bourse closed yesterday with the two indices pointing in opposite directions – the All Share down 13.15 points (0.18%) while the Milanka was up 79.08 points (1.18%) on a turnover of Rs.2.98 billion, down from the previous day’s Rs.3.6 billion, with 109 gainers comfortably ahead of 62 losers.

Brokers and analysts said that activity was mixed with no broad buying interest visible although there was movement in some Dhammika Perera companies, notably LB Finance, which contributed the day’s top business volume of Rs.421.4 million.

There were also crossings on some blue chips – two on Distilleries with 120,000 shares crossed at Rs. 180 and 200,000 at Rs. 181, one on Hayleys with 270,000 shares crossed at Rs. 388 and at Spence Hotels with a crossing of 500,000 shares at Rs. 96.

LB closed Rs.19.50 up at Rs.187 with over 2.2 million shares traded between Rs.171 and Rs.198 followed by Central Finance where nearly 0.3 million shares were done closing Rs.10.10 down at Rs.1,026.20 on a trading range of Rs.1,026.20 to Rs.1,300.

"The All Share Price Index took a beating largely on account of Watapota (Guardian Capital Partners) where nearly 25.2 million new shares were listed today after a rights issue of 75 shares for every two held," a broker said.

"This share went to crazy heights and came down after new shares were listed impacting on the ASPI."

Watapota down Rs.1,164.10 to Rs.265, was the day’s top loser, with nearly 0.5 million shares done between Rs.196 and Rs.701.

Brokers said that there was interest in some of the financial services companies with Vallibel Finance too seeing over 3.7 million shares traded between Rs.50 and Rs.58.20 closing 80 cents down at Rs.50.

Other Dhammika Perera companies that saw movement included Royal Ceramics up Rs.3.20 to Rs.158 on a million shares traded between Rs.154.90 and Rs.163.

Hayleys, where Perera is the top shareholder, gained Rs.2.90 to close at Rs.382 on nearly 0.4 million shares done between Rs.382 and Rs.390.

Other gainers showing quantity included Browns, up Rs.27.10 to close at Rs.285 on over 0.7 million shares done between Rs.268 and Rs.292. Lankem Development closed 50 cents up at Rs.84 on nearly 1.4 million shares done between Rs.83 and Rs.92.50.
