John Keells Tea Market Report

Good demand for Low Growns

Last week’s Ex Estate sale comprising 0.9 mkgs met with improved demand. Select Best BOP/BOPFs sold well being firm to dearer, whilst the Below Best and plainer BOPs which were firm, appreciated as the sale progressed.

BOPFs in this category commenced firm to a little lower, but concluded the sale being Rs 5 to Rs 10 dearer.

Nuwara Eliya BOP/BOPFs were Rs 5 to Rs 10 easier, whilst Uva BOP/BOPFs fluctuated in price following quality and special inquiry. Best Low Grown CTC PF1s continued to be strong selling above Rs 600, whilst others too were selectively dearer based on air mail bids.

Others were mostly firm. High and Medium CTC PF1s were firm to a little easier, whilst BP1s were of a weaker market.

The 3.5 mkgs of Low Growns that were on offer this week, met with good demand, particularly for leafy varieties. Most Russian buyers were quite active , consequently prices for Pekoes, OP/OPAs moved up several rupees.

BOP1s and OP1s which saw restricted demand in the morning, improved as the sale progressed with prices maintaining previous weeks levels.

However in the Small Leaf category, the well made FBOP/FF1s were barely steady.

All others also witnessed restricted demand with prices declining. The high priced Tippy varieties in particular, declined sharply as the sale progressed.

Western Teas

A few Select Best BOPs advanced Rs 10, others were firm to irregular, Below Best sorts advanced Rs 10 and more as the sale progressed, plainer varieties advanced Rs 5 to Rs 10 on average.

Select Best BOPF advanced Rs 10 to Rs 15, other good invoices gained Rs 10 on average, Below Best and plainer varieties which were irregularly lower at the commencement advanced Rs 5 to Rs 10 as the sale progressed. Medium BOP/BOPFs declined Rs 5 to Rs 10 on average.

Nuwara Eliya Teas

Nuwara Eliya BOPs declined substantially with a fair volume remaining unsold. BOPFs were irregular.

Uva Teas

Brighter BOP/BOPFs declined following quality, others shed Rs 10 on average. Uda Pussellawa BOPs maintained, whilst the BOPFs advanced Rs 5.

CTC Teas

Select Best Low Grown PF1s were firm to dearer, others were firm to easier. High and Medium types declined Rs 5 to Rs 10. All BP1s declined Rs 10 on average.

Low Growns

Fair demand. Select Best OP1s shed Rs 10 to Rs 20, Best types too were lower by a Rs 10 to Rs 15, Below Best types were mainly unsaleable due to lack of sufficient bids, however the poorer types were firm to Rs 3 to Rs 5 dearer at times. Select Best along with Best BOP1s maintained last levels, Below Best and poorer types were irregularly dearer by Rs 5 to Rs 10. Select Best OPAs shed Rs 10 on average, Best types too were lower by Rs 5 to Rs 10, Below Best types were fully firm, poorer sorts gained Rs 5 to Rs 10.

Select Best OPs were steady, well twisted Best varieties gained Rs 5 to Rs 10, others were irregularly lower by Rs 5 to Rs 10, Below Best types along with the poorer varieties were mainly firm.

Select Best Pekoes were firm on last levels, bold Pekoes varieties were dearer by Rs 5 to Rs 10, Below Best and poorer sorts were fully firm.

Select Best Pekoe1s advanced sharply by Rs 30 to Rs 50 and more at times, Best types too were dearer by Rs 10 to Rs 15, Below Best and poorer sorts were steady. Select Best and Best BOP/BOP.SPs shed Rs 10 per kg, Below Best and poorer types were lower by Rs 10 to Rs 15 and at times remained neglected due to lack of demand.

Select Best and Best FBOPs, were lower by Rs 10 to Rs 15 and at times more, Below Best sorts shed Rs 10 to Rs 20 and at times were difficult of sale due to lack of demand, poorer sorts too were lower by Rs 10.

Select Best and Best FBOPF1s shed Rs 10 to Rs 15, Below Best and poorer sorts too were lower by a similar margin. Select Best and Best tippy varieties declined substantially, Below Best and poorer sorts too shed Rs 20 and more.

Off Grades

Select Best and Best liquoring Fngs1s appreciated by Rs 15, whilst the Below Best and poorer sorts were dearer by Rs 10. Select Best and Best BMs were lower by Rs 10, whilst the Below Best and poorer sorts depreciated by Rs 15 to Rs 20.

All BPs were firm to dearer by Rs 5. All Low Grown Fngs eased by Rs 10 to Rs 15. Select Best and Best BOP1As were firm to dearer by Rs 5, Below Best BOP1As however declined Rs 10 to Rs 15, poorer sorts eased further by Rs 15 to Rs 20.

Dust

Select Best Dust1s were firm, a few improved Dust1s in the Best category gained Rs 15 to Rs 20, whilst the Below Best types were irregular, poorer sorts shed Rs 10 to 15. Clean secondaries were firm, whilst the balance declined Rs 5 to Rs 10. Best Low Grown Dust/Dust1s were firm whilst the balance shed Rs 5 to Rs 10.
