Renuka City Hotels Plc has completed a major refurbishment worth of Rs. 125 million in anticipation of the expected tourist boom and the World Cup at hand.
The business hotel has upgraded its reception, guestrooms, bathrooms, banquet halls and bar. Renuka hotels have heavily invested on its conference facilities with latest audio visual equipment and can accommodate from 20 to 100 people.
Speaking at the recent press briefing R.B Thambiayah Chairman/Managing Director of Renuka said they are now on par with all other hotels in Colombo and would be able to meet any demand in the future.
Further he added the minimum rates introduced by the governemt have really helped the industry to keep afloat and all hotels will benefit from this move.
"Before the minimum rates were introduced, there was cut throat competition between the hotels. As a result the Colombo hotels suffered heavily in terms of revenue." he said.
Answering a question on his view of the government's target of achieving 2.5 million tourists by 2016, the chairman said at least 35,000 rooms would be needed to meet this target.
He was although cautious about the government's target saying building such a number of rooms in such a short time span might lead to excess rooms and not enough demand thereby pushing the industry into deep trouble.
"We need to be cautious about this target. We need to anticipate the demand accurately and build upon the demand. Excess capacity will lead to rates going down and loss of revenue for the entire tourism industry" said Thambaiyah.
Located in the heart of Colombo for over 30 years, Hotel Renuka and Renuka City Hotel,
hope to cash in on the anticipated tourism boom in the future.
