Sri Lanka Distilleries Corp. net boosted by capital gains

June 8, 2011 (LBO) - Distilleries Corporation of Sri Lanka, said profits rose to 5.0 billion rupees in the March quarter from breakeven levels a year earlier, helped by capital gains, with full year profits rising almost three fold to 8.1 billion rupees.

The firm reported 3.8 billion rupees in capital gains as it sold out of a hospital.

But in the March quarter gross profits of its core distillery business rose 56 percent to 1.5 billion rupees with revenues (after turnover taxes) rising 18 percent to 3.5 billion rupees.

The firm has interests in spirits, plantations and fixed access telecom. Last year it also bought into a sugar firm which also has a distillery.

The telecoms units reported 107 million rupees in fully year pre tax profits up from a 798 million rupee loss, while plantations showed profits of 193 million rupees, up 98 million from a year earlier.
