Sri Lanka stocks close up 1.79-pct

Sept 13, 2010 (LBO) - Sri Lankan shares rose sharply Monday, as a bull run that has made Colombo Asia's second best performing bourse, continued with market capitalisation topping two trillion rupees for the first time, brokers said.

The All Share Price Index closed at 6,131.22, up 1.79 percent (107.81 points) while the more liquid Milanka index rose 2.50 percent (157.04) to close at 6,435.35, according to stock exchange provisional figures.

Turnover was 4.3 billion rupees.

The ASI is up 81 percent this year while market capitalisation is up 85 percent.

Richard Pieris & Company was the most actively traded stock, closing at 173.60 rupees, up 15.70, or almost 10 percent, with 1.8 million shares done.

Distilleries Company, which closed at 180.10, up 13.20 or almost eight percent, and Hemas Holdings, which closed at 42.90, up 1.90 or 4.63 percent, were also heavily traded.

The Colombo Stock Exchange said it has approved in principle an application by the Urban Development Authority for listing up to 100 million debt securities priced at 100 rupees each on the Main Board of the CSE.
