The bullrun on the Colombo bourse continued yesterday on a turnover of Rs.3.19 billion, down from the previous day’s Rs.3.96 billion, with the All Share Price Index gaining 105.25 points (1.69%) and the Milanka up 127.33 points (1.96%) with 104 gainers outpacing 70 losers.
"While JKH and Reefcomber were the biggest turnover generators, there was a run on the banking stocks," Prashan Fernando of Acuity Stockbrokers said. "Some of the banks gained sharply, with Commercial Bank up Rs.17.80 and Sampath Bank up Rs.20.20."
JKH was the day’s top business generator with nearly 1.1 million shares done between Rs.285.10 and Rs.290 gaining Rs.2.70 to close at Rs.290 contributing Rs.310.9 million to the day’s turnover.
There were three crossings among the trades in JKH – two at Rs.285 and one at Rs.290 brokers said. These crossings accounted for about half the JKH trades.
Interest in Reefcomber continued unabated with nearly 19.3 million shares traded between Rs.13.80 and Rs.15.10 with the counter gaining Rs.1.30 to close at Rs.15.10.
Among the banking stock, NTB, Seylan (voting and non-voting), Commercial Bank, Merchant Bank, HNB non-voting), Pan Asia and Sampath saw good volumes and price gains.
In terms of share volume NTB (nearly 2.9 million shares), Seylan X (nearly 3.9 million shares), Merchant Bank (nearly 2.9 million shares), Seylan (nearly 1.2 million shares) and Pan Asia (over 2.1 million shares) were heavily traded with all these counters posting price increases.
Touchwood too demonstrated volume with 6.5 million shares done but lost Rs.3.30 to close at Rs.35.10 on a trading range of Rs.34.60 to Rs.40.70. Distilleries declined slightly, down 30 cents to Rs.179 on over 0.5 million shares done between Rs.178 and Rs.181.90.
Piramal Glass with nearly 9.7 million shares traded was up 10 cents to Rs.4 while Dialog was also up 10 cents to Rs.10.80 with nearly 8.4 million shares traded.
